About the KS Fair

The KS Fair was one of the components of the Science Forum 2013, taking place within the broader set of forum activities in Bonn, Germany, on 23–25 September 2013.

Running alongside the plenary and breakout sessions, the fair gave participants a place to meet and exchange material connected with the forum theme of nutrition and health outcomes as targets for agricultural research.

For the timing of the sessions it accompanied, see the full program schedule. The wider scientific agenda is set out in the conference program.

    Getting to the forum

The Science Forum series was initiated by the Independent Science and Partnership Council (ISPC) in 2009. For further information, contact the ISPC Secretariat at SF-2013@scienceforum13.org.

The KS Fair formed part of the wider forum activities in Bonn, held alongside the main scientific programme of the Science Forum 2013. Running in parallel with plenary and breakout sessions, it gave participants a place to meet, talk and exchange material connected with the central theme of nutrition and health outcomes as targets for agricultural research. The fair sat within a broader set of forum activities convened in Bonn, Germany, in September 2013, and functioned as a working component rather than a separate event.

Science Forum 2013 brought together a wide range of actors in agricultural science, international development and public health, all concerned with the persistent problem of undernutrition and the question of how research systems can contribute to improved outcomes for children and adults in food-insecure countries. The KS Fair complemented that programme by offering space for organisations to present work, share resources and open conversations with delegates, supporting the exchange of evidence and the building of partnerships that the forum as a whole was designed to encourage.

The context for the fair was a recognition that malnutrition, including widespread micronutrient deficiencies and stunting in children, remains a daunting and formidable challenge across much of the world, with a majority of the population in some developing countries living in conditions of insecurity and vulnerability to disease. At the same time, advances in the field have been remarkable, and the forum offered a venue to clarify contributions, discuss impacts and consider how policies, strategies and interventions might be realigned to accelerate progress against hunger and malnutrition.

Organised by those who took part in the external and independent partnership arrangements of the forum, the KS Fair was built around openness and participation. Alongside the schedule of activities, the fair provided photo opportunities, organisational resources and practical logistics, and it stood as one of the components — including the career-related sessions — through which delegates could engage with each other and with the organisations represented in Bonn. The result was a dense, working meeting point in which scientific exchange and networking proceeded side by side.
