BREAKOUT SESSION 9: FARM SIZE, URBANIZATION AND THE LINKS FROM AGRICULTURE TO NUTRITION AND HEALTH- Speaker: Will Masters

Synthesis of ISPC Foresight Study Results on Farm Size and Agriculture-Nutrition linkages

Over time, urbanization and economic growth allow an increasing fraction of people to find nonfarm work, but when combined with demographic transition there is a rise in the number of farmers and hence decline in average farm sizes until cities become large enough for their continued growth to absorb all of the country’s increase in its labour force. Asia as a whole has already or will soon reach this turning point, but for Africa as a whole the number of farm workers will continue to rise and hence average farm sizes will fall for at least two more decades, posing special challenges especially in the most isolated regions.
