Leveraging Fruit Value Chains for Better Diets in Lima, Peru
Unbalanced diets are a growing problem in Lima and other parts of Peru. Greater access to fresh fruits has the potential to improve diets and reduce the risks of choric diseases. However, the environment faced by low-income consumers in Lima does not encourage fruit consumption (e.g., high cost, inconvenient access, limited variety). A value chain approach can contribute to identifying leverage points for increased fresh fruit consumption. However, other approaches are needed for understanding the cultural context and options for stimulating demand. Elucidation of these issues has important implications for ICRAF and others to understand the potential role of agroforestry to contribute to improved diets.
